WISH LESS galleryでは、香港で話題沸騰のクリエイティブ集団「SOCIAL NERD」の共同創設者、Katol（カトル）の日本初個展を開催いたします。デジタルと見間違うほどの高いペインティング技術と描写力で、香港中のサイネージやグラフィックデザインを数多く手がけるKatolは、香港で最も多作のサインアーティストとしても知られています。そんな超絶技巧を兼ね備えたKatolでさえ、手描きが故にミスを犯すこともしばしばあり、本人はそのミスすなわち予期せぬエラーを新たな可能性としてポジティブに置き換え、表現の幅を広げています。

世間は「エラー」を欠陥やミスだとみなしていますが、Katolはそこに可能性を見出し、ユーモアとして捉えます。AIに依存し、型通りで完璧ばかり追い求める現代社会では、本当にそれぞれの個性を発揮できるのでしょうか。Katolの創作的探求と実践の場では、いわゆる「エラー」がしばし発生します。完璧な創造物を目指すのではなく、それよりも彼が興味を引くのは、独創性をより際立たせる人間らしさを含んだ僅かなエラーなのです。
面白いことに貪欲なKatolは、多忙な日々から抜け出すための小休止とも言える本展において、「エラー」することの喜びを鑑賞者へ示唆します。ハンドペイントから印刷物まで、ストリートアートやグラフィックデザイン、タイポグラフィなど様々な要素を再構築させ、その中で生じたエラーを隠されたアイデアとしてポジティブに反転させます。彼の愛するカルチャーの原点であり、創作のルーツとして繋がりの強い東京での自身初となる個展「ERRORS WITH PRIDE」をぜひお楽しみください。
[ プロフィール ]
Katol／カトル
香港のサインライター／グラフィックデザイナーであるKatol は、幼少期より原宿のサブカルチャーに影響を受け、レコードジャケットからストリートウェアまで、あらゆるデザインに夢中になる。香港で伝説的な人気を誇るストリートアートユニット「Start From Zero」の創設者の一人であり、過去にはコペンハーゲンやシドニーなど国内外でグループ展に参加。
近年知人らとクリエイティブ集団「SOCIAL NERD」を設立し、ショップのサインやブックデザイン、キュレーション、レコードジャケットからTシャツ、さらにはバス車体への大掛かりなペンティングに至るまで、さまざまなデザイン関連のプロジェクトにも携わる。これまでにNIKE、ニューバランス、VANS、RIMOWA、香港バス、K11、ブルーボトルコーヒーなどあらゆる企業やアパレルブランドとコラボしている。
自称「便利屋」と称し、コーヒーとランドリーの店「Coffee & Laundry」を香港のセントラルエリアにオープンし、注目の的となる。店舗内で小規模な展示を企画するなど、キュレーターとしても香港のクリエイティブコミュニティにおいて非常に高く評価されている。
ストリートアートからコマーシャルまで、フォントへの愛は不変と語るKatolは、香港のサイネージシーンにおいて最も多作なアーティストとして知られ、近年香港でトレンドとされるサインライティングの再興を牽引する重要人物である。本展が自身初の個展であり、20年にわたるKatolのキャリアに新たな章が刻まれる。

WISH LESS gallery is thrilled to announce Hong Kong based artist Katol’s first solo exhibition in Japan. Katol is the co-founder of Hong Kong’s respected creative collective SOCIAL NERD. Katol is known as one of the most prolific sign writing artists in Hong Kong, having worked on numerous signage and graphic design projects throughout the city using his incredible painting skills. Even with such superb technique, Katol sometimes makes mistakes using the hand-painted process, he embraces these mistakes and builds on them, leading to new possibilities that expand his range of creative expression.
[ STATEMENT ]
“Errors”, what the general public perceives as defects or mistakes, Katol cherishes and even finds fun in. In today’s world where we rely on AI, in a society that pursues perfection and the formulaic, is that enough to truly express our personality? In Katol’s exploratory stages, the so-called “errors” often appear; the perfection of commissioned works is not what he pursues. Instead, he finds the highly personable little imperfections more interesting, as they highlight the uniqueness of each creation.
“ERRORS WITH PRIDE” is a breathing space, a vacation for Katol. He has once again combined street art culture, typography and graphic design, from hand-lettering to printing, fonts to graphics, allowing the audience to appreciate the joy of making mistakes, embracing and being proud of “errors”. This is Katol’s first solo exhibition, and Tokyo is also Katol’s beloved cultural starting point, making this connection to his roots highly meaningful.
[ PROFILE ]
Katol
Hong Kong sign painter and graphic designer. In his early years, he was influenced by Harajuku subculture, from album covers to street fashion. Katol later became a co-founder of the renowned Hong Kong street art unit, Start From Zero, who exhibited their works internationally.
In recent years, Katol co-founded the creative agency SOCIAL NERD, working on diverse design projects. He is also the co-owner of Coffee & Laundry, which combines coffee and self-service laundry with various types of exhibitions.
Throughout his 20-year creative journey, Katol’s love for typography has remained constant. He is one of the most prolific artists in Hong Kong’s hand-painted signage scene, driving the rebirth of hand-written signs in Hong Kong. In 2024, Katol’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo marks a new chapter in his career.

SOCIAL NERD is a new entity founded by the team behind PERKS, collaborations with more than 300 creatives revealed a common challenge: talented artists, akin to “NERDS,” often find it difficult to balance their craft with publicity, public relations, and social engagements.
In response, SOCIAL NERD was established as a platform where socially adept individuals support these “NERDY” artists. By handling publicity and promotion, SOCIAL NERD allows them to focus on their creative pursuits.
