WISH LESS galleryでは、画家・北林みなみの個展「A Stranger Looks Like…」

◆

WISH LESS gallery is excited to announce the Japanese painter Minami Kitabayashi’s solo exhibition “A Stranger Looks Like…”.
Drawing on memories and experiences from her childhood in Thailand and Singapore, Kitabayashi depicts tropical nature and the tiny figures and animals that inhabit it, rendered in meticulous detail.

Each leaf is carefully painted, while delicate wildflowers sway in the breeze. Every detail of Kitabayashi’s imagined forest is thoughtfully crafted, creating a world alive with the presence of living things. Her lush, deep-green foliage fills the canvas with a remarkable sense of depth. Through her skillful compositions, viewers feel as though they are stepping into the forest themselves, witnessing the scenes unfolding before them. Sensing the presence of wild animals lurking deep within the jungle and perhaps even tiny spirits hidden among the trees, we find ourselves moving between the boundaries of reality and fantasy.

In contrast to the vibrant vitality of the tropical plants, the human figures in her paintings remain small and motionless, their faces expressionless. Their unwavering gazes quietly evoke a sense of awe toward nature and the solitude of human existence, lending the works an even greater air of mystery.

Capturing moments of wonder discovered within vast natural landscapes, Minami Kitabayashi continues to expand her artistic practice. In May this year, she published  Boku no Mori (My Forest), her first picture book, with Kodansha. We invite you to immerse yourself in her dreamlike world, where dense jungles meet the vivid, contrasting hues of emerald-green waters and skies.

[ ARTIST STATEMENT ]

On this planet, you and I
carry nearly identical round faces
and dark brown eyes,
breathing in and out, endlessly,
longing for the day this repetition will cease.

Sometimes you stand before me,
showering me with words.
I know
that you despise clean shirts
and beautiful gardens.

As I listen to the storm of sounds
flung from your pink tongue,
I imagine you sleeping at night.

Like a bear asleep in its den,
you curl your back and close your eyes.
A deep breathing rises
from your half-open lips,
and I know the night air
is filling your lungs.

The cloth wrapped around your large body
quietly slips aside,
and soft skin spills out,
a gentle peach,
the same gentle peach as mine.
