WISH LESS galleryでは、英国人アーティスト、シエナ・バーンズの個展「Even Bad Girls Get the Blues」を開催いたします。
ロンドン出身、独学でアーティストとなったシエナの優艶でエロティックな作品の根底には、反骨的なパンクスピリットが存在し、アイコン的スターからインスピレーションを受け描かれた美しい人物像や挑発的なスローガンよって、現代社会で問題視されるジェンダーやセクシャリティについて訴えかけます。圧倒的なウーマンパワーを見せつけるシエナの世界観と大胆なラインワークにご注目ください。
［ ステイトメント ］
本タイトル「Even Bad Girls Get the Blues」とは、ネット上で青春を謳歌する若い世代の視線を通して屈折した、女性的なポップパワーの喜びを表しています。
オンライン環境はますます加速化していますが、人々はまだストリップクラブや銀幕のセックスシンボルなど、古くからの女神像を崇めています。
シエナ・バーンズの作品は、より世間へ認知されるため女神のごとく現状へ立ち向かうクィア・アイコンたちを讃えています。シエナの描くイメージは威厳を放ち、アマゾン・フェミニストまたはストリート・スマート・フェミニストとしてセクシャリティを強く主張し、戦い続けます。
本作品は、スーザン・ソンタグが「キャンプについてのノート」（1964）において、「不自然なものへの愛」として定義したキャンプ（※）を揶揄しており、そこでは真実は作為的な事柄によって明らかにされます。
女性的な概念が進化するにつれ、ビーナスへの理想は広がり、一般的なジェンダー基準を多様化させることによって、ル・ポールのドラァグ・レースのスター等、ノンバイナリー美人たち、ポップアイドルの元祖エリザベス・テイラーらも同格化されます。そして往年のスター達は、かつて君臨した華やかな世界に取り憑く、古いハリウッドの亡霊として蘇るのです。
ベラスケスの「鏡のヴィーナス」のように、視線の概念は、レンズの後ろと前にいるクリエイターとインターネットによって複雑化されています。一体誰が誰を見ているのでしょうか？
作家は、見つめ返してくる被写体を描くことで、自身を取り戻し、力を競い合います。彼らは、女性らしさは男性の視線の中でしか生きられないという考え方に対抗し、より強くなったガールパワーを見せつけるのです。
※キャンプ…… 英語圏の美学・文芸批評などで使われる用語のひとつで、大げさに誇張された振る舞いや、過度に装飾の多いけばけばしいファッションなどを意味する。また、わざとらしさ・俗っぽさ・泥臭さを意識的に活かした芸術表現もこう呼ぶ。一般に、同性愛者の美意識や価値観を表現・理論化するために用いられてきた。(Wikipediaより抜粋)

シエナ・バーンズ／Siena Barnes
ロンドンの下町イーストエンド地区出身のアーティスト。これまでに東京、ナッシュビル、ロンドン、ベルリンなど世界各地で展覧会を開催。セクシーで反抗的な彼女の作品は、トム・オブ・フィンランド財団のコレクションに所蔵され、ナッシュビルでの展示ではキム・ゴードンと肩を並べた。最近ではヒステリックグラマーと継続的にコラボレーションするなど、ファッション業界でも注目される作家である。
シエナ・バーンズはエロティックで挑発的なインクドローイングを通して、世間に蔓延る女性問題や性差別について声を上げ続けている。

WISH LESS gallery is thrilled to present Even Bad Girls Get the Blues, a solo exhibition by British artist Sienna Barnes, her first solo show at WISH LESS gallery.
London-born, self-taught artist Sienna’s elegant and erotic work is rooted in a rebellious punk spirit.
Inspired by iconic stars, her beautiful portraits and provocative slogans address issues of gender and sexuality in contemporary society.
Sienna’s vision and bold linework showcase the overwhelming power of women.
［ STATEMENT ］
Even Bad Girls Get the Blues is a rapture of feminine pop power refracted through the gaze of a generation coming of age on the internet.
Despite our ever-quickening online environment, our old, pagan desire for goddess worship can be seen everywhere from strip clubs to the sirens of the silver screen.
Siena Barnes’ ink drawings celebrate queer icons who, like goddesses, challenge the status quo and take up more space than society would care to permit. The subjects Siena paints are larger than life – amazons (street smart feminists) with assertive sexuality who give as good as they get.
The work riffs on camp, defined in “Notes on Camp” by Susan Sontag as a “love of the unnatural”, where authenticity is revealed through artifice.
As notions of the feminine evolve, the Venusian ideal expands, fucking with societal gender norms to include the stars of Ru Paul’s drag Race, non binary beauties and proto pop idol Liz Taylor. Superstars become spectres, ghosts of old Hollywood haunting a brave new world they once ruled.
In the vein of Velazquez’s “The Toilet of Venus,” notions of the gaze are complicated by the internet with content creators behind and in front of the lens. Who is looking at who?
The artist reclaims her body through drawing subjects who return the gaze, in a contest of power. They challenge relational femininity ―or the idea that the feminine is only alive in the eyes of the male gaze ― and present an emboldened blend of grrl power.

Siena Barnes has exhibited across the world in cities including Tokyo, Nashville, London and Berlin. Examples of her sexy, subversive and surprising work can be found in the Tom of Finland Foundation collection, hanging next to Kim Gordon in Nashville and emblazoned across the chests of Harajuku fashionistas. She continues to collaborate with iconic Japanese fashion legends Hysteric Glamour, hits the studio every day and sells on the secondary market.
