WISH LESS gallery is honoured to announce Wataru Komachi’s solo exhibition ‘FREE HUGS’.
Komachi has been creating unruly work consisting of a mix of collage, painting and photographs as a free spirit in the world of art, fashion and music.
Within the chaotic imagery of his rough brushwork shines the purity of his mind, which attracts his enthusiastic followers who are fascinated with Komachi’s originality. His recent work often includes a glorious slew of banal phrases lifted from social media.

In this exhibition, he will be showing new drawings and installation work.
Alongside a selection of zines in collaboration with British artist Rob Kidney. Also we will have a ‘LIVE zine making’ event by Komachi and Rob Kidney during the show. Don’t miss it!

Let me tell you about my personal encounter with Wataru Komachi.
20 years ago, I, Rob Kidney was attending art university in my hometown of Brighton in England and working part-time at the local well-known pop culture boutique called ‘PUSSY’
I was already deeply into Japanese pop culture then. One weekday night I was lucky enough to attend a Japanese DJ event in Brighton by Yasuharu Konishi  (PIZZICATO FIVE) and Tomoyuki Tanaka (Fantastic Plastic Machine) and enjoy drinking with them in The VIP area, it was an unforgettable night.
The next morning when I arrived at PUSSY for work, the owner handed me a zine. It was roughly bound by hand and very unique. There was a business card stapled to the back page bearing the name Wataru Komachi. I presumed that it was a gift from someone I had met at the club the previous night, the owner said ‘A nice Japanese man liked our shop and left this zine’. I immediately fell in love with this inspirational publication made by a mysterious Japanese man named ‘Wataru Komachi’.

In 2003 I finally relocated to Tokyo, soon after arriving I received an illustration commission from Japanese fashion brand OZONE ROCKS. During my first meeting at their offices in Harajuku my eyes were drawn to large painting on the wall that seemed strangely familiar. The owner of the company told me it was painted by an artist called Wataru Komachi!
Desperately seeking Komachi!
I knew I had to meet the artist whose zine I had treasured for years, so I asked if they could arrange a meeting.

About 6 months later, the meeting finally happened, we hit it off immediately and found we had a lot in common. I thanked him for the zine he had left in Brighton years before. Komachi was amazed that I was the person who had ultimately received the zine he’d left at Pussy years before, he told me that he’d  been on a one-day trip to Brighton during a vacation based in London, some friends in London had recommended he check out PUSSY and he liked it there.

It’s like a stroryline from a movie how we eventually met through a single zine.
Now I am so honoured to have Komachi’s solo show at my own gallery in Tokyo.
Come and have your heart moved by Komachi’s romantic world!
